Functional resin use in solitary bees

چکیده
1. Overall, more than 30% of bee species depend on non-floral resources, such as resin. However, the importance resin in ecology, particularly for solitary bees, has received very little attention thus far. 2. A plethora loose natural history observations, inferences, and author opinions hint towards a striking range uses nesting by bees. In this review, we focus use bees identify extant knowledge, knowledge gaps, future research directions with regard to functional biology. 3. Resin nests can be broadly grouped roles nest structure, chemical camouflage, defence, moisture regulation, anti-microbial properties. We point out that usage appears constrained environmental physiological factors. Bee species-specific tolerances toxicity availability environment seem determine choices subsequently nests. finally highlight may play major role determining ambient microbiota, due its strong antimicrobial conclude better mechanistic understanding biology aid assessing shifts light global change.

The Bees among Us: Modelling Occupancy of Solitary Bees
Occupancy modelling has received increasing attention as a tool for differentiating between true absence and non-detection in biodiversity data. This is thought to be particularly useful when a species of interest is spread out over a large area and sampling is constrained. We used occupancy modelling to estimate the probability of three phylogenetically independent pairs of native-introduced s...
متن کاملResin collection and social immunity in honey bees.
Diverse animals have evolved an ability to collect antimicrobial compounds from the environment as a means of reducing infection risk. Honey bees battle an extensive assemblage of pathogens with both individual and "social" defenses. We determined if the collection of resins, complex plant secretions with diverse antimicrobial properties, acts as a colony-level immune defense by honey bees. Exp...
متن کاملStingless bees use terpenes as olfactory cues to find resin sources.
Insects largely rely on olfactory cues when seeking and judging information on nests, partners, or resources. Bees are known to use volatile compounds-besides visual cues-to find flowers suitable for pollen and nectar collection. Tropical stingless bees additionally collect large amounts of plant resins for nest construction, nest maintenance, nest defense, and to derive chemical constituents f...
متن کاملWidespread occurrence of honey bee pathogens in solitary bees.
Solitary bees and honey bees from a neighbouring apiary were screened for a broad set of putative pathogens including protists, fungi, spiroplasmas and viruses. Most sampled bees appeared to be infected with multiple parasites. Interestingly, viruses exclusively known from honey bees such as Apis mellifera Filamentous Virus and Varroa destructor Macula-like Virus were also discovered in solitar...
متن کاملSolitary Bees as Alternative Pollinators of Pennsylvania Fruit Crops
Introduction Pollination is a pivotal, keystone process in almost all terrestrial ecosystem food webs: it supports global and sustainable productivity in agriculture and forestry, and maintains the biodiversity of plant and animal life. Bees are the most important pollinators, but bee declines in abundance and species richness have been documented on 4 continents. Almost 100 crop species in the...
